Overview

This is a design-led course grounded in the prestigious School of Architectural, Building and Civil Engineering. The course develops your understanding of the principles of engineering, which you can then apply to architectural design projects.

Combining the creativity of architecture with the rigour of engineering, the Architectural Engineer plays a key role in the production of a sustainable built environment. Architectural Engineers oversee the whole building process, from concept to construction. Architectural Engineers combine architecture, environmental design and structural engineering to deliver iconic, resilient and sustainable buildings.

You will study environmental, structural, and architectural design in an interactive format. The traditional studies of building materials, mechanics of structures, building physics and environmental systems will be brought together with humanistic subjects through a series of integrated design projects. These will be the common ground where the relevant disciplines come together to challenge and develop your skills as an Architectural Engineer.

To ensure that you gain an appropriate industrial perspective, our students normally have the opportunity to undertake site visits and field trips. Students on the MEng course normally have the additional opportunity to go on a study trip to a European city. Contribution from leading practitioners and guest speakers in the fields of architecture and engineering is also an integral part of the learning experience.

What's the difference between MEng and BEng?

The MEng course will deepen and broaden your architectural competencies and environmental engineering skills through a major design project, as well as taught topics. You will gain an understanding of methods for automating construction manufacturing, as well as an in-depth understanding of the role of a building in its environment.

The BEng course will develop your skills and knowledge in the fundamentals of engineering, with an additional understanding of the architectural design process. As the BEng course is one year shorter compared to the MEng course, this option is ideal if you are keen to start your career in industry early, or if you wish to specialise through one of our other MSc programmes after your BEng studies. Students on the BEng degree have the option to transfer to the MEng degree at the end of year two, subject to satisfactory performance.

This course covers a wide range of topics within architecture, structural engineering, and environmental and energy performance, providing an excellent grounding for you to work in any relevant sector of the industry. Theoretical aspects of the course are grounded in real-life problems to illustrate the subjects being studied.

Semester 1 & 2

Design Skills

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • Enhance skills of observation, documentation and communication of characteristics of the material world that surrounds us.
  • Demonstrate the use of a range of 2D and 3D manual and digital architectural representational techniques as a foundation to selecting appropriate forms of representation to communicate design intent in design studio.
  • Engage in a series of design tasks to familiarise students with developing clear design concepts and narratives.
  • Produce simple technical architectural drawings conforming to industry drawing conventions.
  • Utilise a variety of visual and graphic methods of design analysis and synthesis to engender critical thinking and self-reflection.

A part aim for this module is to enable students to become aware of and develop their academic, professional and personal skills through Personal Best. Personal Best is a development programme available to all students at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. Support and guidance are provided to all Part A students to engage with skills and personal development through lectures and a dedicated app.

Structural Forms and Stress Analysis

The aim of this module is to develop understanding of commonly used structural forms and their qualitative behaviour, complex states of stress in solids, and potential failure of brittle and ductile materials.

Mathematical Modelling of Structures

The aim of this module is to develop mathematical tools to analyse the internal actions and deformations of widely used structural elements under external static loads.

Mechanical and Mathematical Principles of Fluid Mechanics

The aims of the module is to develop an understanding of fluid mechanical principles set within the context of the global hydrological cycle coupled to salient mathematical and statistical concepts.

Engineering Materials for Construction

The aim of this module is to understand the properties of civil, architectural and construction engineering materials and how this knowledge is applied to design, construction and maintenance, together with an appreciation of sustainability and buildability.

Professional Skills

The aim of this module is for the students to explore and reflect on the basics of academic and professional required for their learning development and employability in the construction industry.

The aim of this module is for the student to be introduced to collaborative practices and professional perspectives in solving design problems for the built environment.

Geomatics Engineering Surveying 1

The aim of this module is for the to begin to acquire the theoretical and practical skills required for a Junior Engineer involved with Land Surveying or Setting Out on a construction project.

Soil Mechanics and Geology

The aim of this module is for the student to understand and apply concepts of soil mechanics and engineering geology for the solution of geotechnical engineering problems and to be able to analyse and design exemplar foundation, slope and retaining structures.

Analysis & Design of Steel and Timber Structures

The aim of this module is to:

  • enable students to use practical concepts and elastic analytical techniques for determining internal forces and displacements in structures, and
  • introduce the principles for designing steel and timber buildings using Eurocodes as an example.

Design of Concrete and Masonry Structures

The aim of this module is to:

  • provide the students with a solid background on the key concepts and process of the structural design of concrete and masonry structures, and
  • develop their ability to apply such knowledge in the design process of a structure with concrete and masonry elements.

Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the engineering topics of thermodynamics and heat transfer. The learning is designed to develop the fundamental knowledge and skills required to understand the design and real-world performance of buildings and their energy systems. It will prepare students for further applied learning in Part C.

Indoor Environment

The aims of the module is to introduce the importance of the environmental quality of the indoor environment for occupant wellbeing, focusing on occupant thermal comfort, indoor air quality, visual and acoustic comfort, and the influence of building design in both domestic and non-domestic buildings.

Integrated Design Project 1

The aims for the students are to:

  • capitalise on the skills and knowledge acquired in Part A and develop them into the sustainable solutions to multifaceted design problems,
  • form the awareness of the necessity to adopt a holistic and sustainable approach towards design which integrates the science and art of construction within the contemporary cultural and social context,
  • develop a self-reflective routine to practice and document this as part of their personal and academic experience, and
  • embrace collaborative practices and professional perspectives in cross-disciplinary teams to conceive, test and finalise the project of a building.

Control, Modelling and Simulation

The aims of the module are to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the underpinning mathematical techniques used in control modelling and simulation of buildings and systems.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the principles behind the design and operation of mechanical and electrical systems for medium to large buildings.

Integrated Design Project 2

The aim of this module is to:

  • build upon the knowledge and skills gained in Part A and B with projects of increasing scope and complexity that offer a variety of programmes and contexts for student learning.
  • improve students' ability of translating ideas into design solutions by working on projects of medium scale in context.
  • integrate architectural values with engineering sustainable strategies within the field of building design.
  • conceive structural and energy strategies to generate integrated and sustainable technological supports to the building.
  • develop a self-reflective approach to practice and document this as part of the personal learning experience.

Research Dissertation

The aims of this module are for students to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the role of research to overcome knowledge gaps,
  • synthesise information from a number of sources in order to gain a coherent understanding of a complex problem,
  • undertake the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their degree, and
  • present rational arguments and draw independent conclusions based on a rigorous approach to collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.

Contracts and Law in Architectural Engineering

The aim of this module is to create students understanding of legal and contractual aspects of the Built Environment, the strategies which can be applied by architectural engineers to successfully manage construction projects, and the awareness of health and safety and the ability to apply the skills and knowledge obtained in the UK construction industry.

This module will expose the students to characteristics of the construction market to build understanding of the legal framework, contractual relationships and obligations in the construction sector and to develop knowledge, skills and awareness of professional responsibilities for architectural engineers. This would offer the opportunity for the students to interpret the particular needs of different client groups and stakeholders, evaluate the application of relevant contractual procedures and health and safety strategies in the wider society. This will expand students' knowledge and understanding of the construction industries in the National and Global arenas.

Integrated Design Project 3

The aims of this module are:

  • To apply the knowledge and skills gained in Parts A, B, C, and I to projects of increasing scope and complexity.
  • To enhance students technical skills to produce a design for a medium to large-scale structure, complete with a sound understanding of the technical performance of the building in terms of energy efficiency, use and management.
  • To enhance students technical skills to produce a design for a medium large-scale structure, complete with a sound understanding of the structural systems, at primary and secondary levels.
  • To enhance students individual approach to architecture and its languages, establishing ownership of the design process through a comprehensive exploration of a design problem and the ability to organize a personal programme of work to meet deadlines.
  • To integrate the above aspects in an innovative and functional building design to meet the current challenges and deliver a sustainable and holistic project.
  • To integrate their design aspiration with conflicting social, economic and environmental demands in a global and local context in relationship to the client, user and public.

Thermal Modelling and 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • understand the principles of building thermal modelling, building performance simulation and Building Information Modelling (BIM), and
  • gain a perspective on the applications of these techniques to the design process of low-energy buildings.

Principles of Design and Construction (15 credits)

The aim of the module is to provide students with the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases.

Low Carbon Materials for Construction (15 credits)

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the principles regarding the use of low carbon materials in construction and civil engineering and how this knowledge can be applied to the design, construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure.

Semester 2

Compulsory

Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (15 credits)

The module is aimed at developing students¿ knowledge and understanding of vibrational problems in structural engineering, and to provide them with the basic analytical and numerical tools to assess the dynamic response of structures, with special emphasis on the vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM) and seismic design to Eurocode 8 (EC8).

Design Management (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of the principles of design management and techniques for cost and value management.

Disaster Risk Management (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce general built environment professionals to sustainable Disaster Risk Management (DRM) activities (structural and non-structural) worldwide and
  • explore the links between engineering and planning interventions and subsequent increases or decreases in disaster risk (within the context of the challenges posed by climate change).

How you'll be assessed

Students are assessed through a combination of individual and group coursework, design-based outputs, technical essays, verbal presentations and examinations.

Students will develop and employ a wide range of skills, from hand-sketching to Building Information Modelling (BIM), from hand calculations to finite element modelling and analysis, from composing an engineering report to delivering a convincing visual presentation.

Placement year

All our Architectural Engineering students are given the opportunity to undertake industrial training. Most placements are fully salaried, with typical salaries from £17,000 to £22,000.

You will be supported by dedicated staff in securing a placement that best suits your skills and professional aspirations. This year of practical experience gives you a clearer understanding of the industry to help with the later stages of your studies and deciding your future career direction.

During the placement year, your employer will nominate an experienced member of their team who will supervise you. You will also be visited by your University tutor at your place of work and will be required to write reports on your progress and experience.

Please note that whilst the Department offers great support for students to find a placement, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to source and secure their industrial placement.

Additional award

This course comes with the option to undertake an industrial placement for a year, at the end of which you will gain a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS). This is an additional award to the final qualification you will receive once you have successfully completed this course.

As a student on our Architectural Engineering course, you will have access to a wide range of facilities, including the School's own design studio and computer laboratory that support the specialist teaching on the course.

At over 3,000m2, our purpose-built, open-plan laboratory is one of the largest in the UK, benefiting from £1 million in refurbishment and new equipment in the last five years, from brand new digital fabrication and design suites, laser cutters and state-of-the-art robotic arms through to traditional workbenches and hand tools.

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application, but in exceptional cases, an interview may be required. If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the School, giving them the opportunity to meet staff, see the extensive facilities and gain a vital insight into the student experience of an Architectural Engineering student at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ.

Many of our courses receive a large number of applications for each available place.  We cannot unfortunately always make offers to all applicants who are predicted to achieve/have achieved grades in line with our advertised typical offers.

Australia

Typical offers for students from Australia are based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Typically, we would require a score between 85.00 and 94.00. For students from Queensland, requirements from the Overall Position (OP) would typically be between 8 and 4.

Further to the above, students would normally be required to pass one of the following qualifications:

  • ACT Year 12 Certificate
  • New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC)
  • Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE)
  • Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)
  • South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)

Belgium

The Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (CESS) and Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (DSO) are both acceptable qualifications for direct entry into first year undergraduate courses. We typically require an overall score ranging from 75% to 85%. Where the 20 point marking scale is used, we would typically require marks between 15/20 and 17/20.

Specific subject marks may be required for some courses and where this is the case, this should be studied as a 4-hour subject. Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 50% or higher in Maths within the CESS or DSO.

Cyprus

The Apolytirion is not accepted for direct entry to the University when studied on its own. However, we are happy to consider students taking the Apolytirion alongside either 1 or 2 A Levels. For courses with typical offer requirements of ‘ABB’, we would typically require 19.5 in the Apolytirion alongside an ‘A’ at A Level or 18.0 in the Apolytirion alongside ‘AB’ at A Level. Where courses require specific subjects, these must be taken at A Level.

Typical offers are based on the General Access Grade in the Panhellenics and range from 16.5 to 19.0 depending on the course applied for. Where courses have specific subject requirements, these should be taken as ‘Direction’ subjects within the Panhellenics. Students applying for Science or Engineering courses would generally be expected to have followed the Sciences direction. We will also normally ask for a mark between 17.0 and 19.0 in the Apolyterion certificate.

Students who have studied 1 or 2 A Levels alongside the Apolyterion (without taking the Panhellenic Exams) would normally be required to obtain high grades in their A Level  exams along with an average mark of between 17.0 and 19.0 in the Apolyterion. Singapore

For students with Singapore A Levels, typical offers normally range from BBC to AAA from three H2 Level subjects and offers are typically one grade lower than the typical A Level requirement as stated in the undergraduate prospectus due to the comparative difficulty.

Where courses have specific subject requirements, an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade would normally be required in line with UK A Level requirements.

Students with a Diploma from one of Singapore’s five Polytechnics would be considered for first year entry with requirements ranging from 2.50 to 3.10. Second year entry may be considered in some cases. Please contact the Global Engagement team to check if this is applicable.

Slovakia

For students taking the Slovakian Matura (VysvedÄenie o maturitnej skúške), typical offers range from 2.00 to 1.00 average from best 4 subjects with specific subject marks (either 1 or 2) required for some courses.

All students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.

Slovenia

For students taking the Maturitetno SpriÄevalo., we typically require an overall total score of between 22 and 30 out of 34.

Where courses have specific subject requirements, a score of or 5 will normally be required in each. Applicants for Science or Engineering courses would normally be required to take Maths at higher level and would be required to achieve a mark of between 6 and 8.

All students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.

South Africa

For students taking the National Senior Certificate (NSC), typical offers range from 6,6,6,6,6 to 7,7,7,7,7 from the best 5 subjects, excluding Life Orientation.

For students taking the Titulo de Bachillerato, we typically require an overall score of 7.50 – 9.50.

Where courses have specific subject requirements, a score of 8.00 or 9.00 will normally be required in each.  Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 5.50 – 6.50 within the Titulo de Bachillerato.

All students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.

Sri Lanka

Students with A Level or IB qualifications will be considered for direct entry to undergraduate degree courses. Please see the undergraduate prospectus for specific course requirements.

Sri Lankan A Levels are considered comparable to the typical A Level requirements. However, as an A* grade cannot be achieved in Sri Lankan A Levels, an A grade is acceptable to meet this requirement where applicable.

All students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.

Sweden

For students tasking the Avgångsbetyg / Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskola, typical offers are normally based on an average score from 2500 credits with an ‘A’ counting as 20 points, a ‘B’ counting as 17.5 points, a ‘C’ counting as 15 points etc. Typical offers range from 16.0 to 18.8 average from 2500 credits.

Where courses have specific subject requirements, an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade would normally be required from 2 relevant subject modules within the Slutbetyg.

Students who took the Avgångsbetyg / Slutbetyg från Gymnasieskola under the old grading system are considered on a case by case basis with most courses requiring a majority of ‘VG’ and ‘MVG’ grades.

English language studied within one of the above qualifications is normally sufficient to meet the university’s minimum entry requirements. Please see the Approved Qualifications table for further details.

Switzerland

Students taking the following qualifications would be considered for direct entry to undergraduate courses: Certificat de MaturitéMaturitätsausweisAttestato di Maturità. Typical offer requirements are based on average achievement from best 12 subjects and offers typically range from 4.8 – 5.5. Where courses require specific subjects, we would be looking for marks between 5.0 and 6.0 in school assessment.

Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 4.0 or higher in school assessment for Maths.

Taiwan

Students taking the Senior High School Diploma will need to complete a suitable Foundation Year.

For courses which require achievement in GCSE Maths, we normally look for a score of C or higher in Maths in the Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE).

Thailand

Students taking the Certificate of Secondary Education/Maw 6 will need to complete a suitable Foundation Year.

Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of ‘3’ or higher in Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Maths.

The Gulf

United States of America

For students studying in the USA, typical offers for entry onto undergraduate level courses are based on obtaining 3.2/4.0 GPA in the High School Graduation Diploma, in addition to a combination of any three of the following:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Exam
  • IB Higher Levels
  • College level class credit (should normally be taken in Grade 12 for one semester, and be equivalent to 3 credits/units in an academic subject)
  • Honors classes (should be taken for a full academic year in either Grade 11 or Grade 12)

Where courses have a specific A Level subject requirement this must be achieved in the relevant AP exam or IB Higher Level. Where AP is used to meet an A Level Maths subject requirement AP Calculus BC would be required.

Zimbabwe A Levels are considered comparable to the typical A Level requirements. However, as an A* grade cannot be achieved in Zimbabwe A Levels, an A grade is acceptable to meet this requirement where applicable.  Typical offers for students taking the Zimbabwe A levels exclude the General Paper.

UK tuition fees align with the applicable fee caps set by the UK government, and as such they are subject to changes made to the agreed cap in a specific year. Tuition fees are reviewed annually by the University and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment.

Additional costs

While the cost of your tuition covers lots of things, it doesn’t cover everything. For instance, this course doesn’t cover the cost of any stationery, printing, books or re-assessments which you might need.

We work closely with a consortium of the leading UK companies who offer our students sponsorship and placement opportunities.

The º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ Construction Consortium provides a core of sponsoring organisations that offer excellent placement and sponsorship opportunities, supplemented by extensive collaborating organisations across the wider industry.

Sponsorship will provide you with a bursary during your study, summer placement work for those who want it, and a paid twelve-month placement with your sponsor company. In many cases, students are offered employment with their sponsor company after graduating and many are now in senior positions within these companies.

Career opportunities in multi-disciplinary engineering and architectural design practices are the primary career paths for students.

As a holistic designer, your competences will be very attractive to a multitude of design-led practices and consultants. Typically, you will work for large, internationally-known companies.

The School holds its own Careers Fair. In recent years, over 50 companies have attended the Careers Fair to employ our students. This includes major consulting and contracting companies in the UK, as well as more local and specialist firms. Other major employers who employ Architectural Engineers, as well as other graduates, also attend the University-wide careers fair.
